Several months ago, people across the country were suffering with severe drought conditions. Since recently however, it has been the opposite, with rains falling down on several parts of the country at regular intervals.
Today was no different, only worse, as disaster situations are beginning to occur in several areas.
The Southern part of the country suffered the brunt of the adverse weather conditions with a mound of earth collapsing onto a house in Kabaragala following rains on Sunday, November 6.
Meanwhile, earth-slips in Imaduwa damaged fve more houses in the area while vehicular movement was left hampered owing to earth-slips in a number of areas along the Imaduwa – Akuressa road.
In Weediyawatta , Yakala, along the Colombo – Kandy main road,is a three-floor building, of which the first floor was declared open on Sunday. Come dawn Monday, a mere 24 hours later, the owners woke up to a collapsed building…
The Gin Ganga rises…
Adverse weather conditions have prompted the increase in water levels of the Gin Ganga with a flooding risk set to occur in the event the water level passes the 4.5 metre mark at the Baddegama water meter. As at 7 am today, the water levels were hovering at 4.2 meters.
According to the News 1st correspondent, a number of low lying areas along the Gin Ganga including Inimankada and Mulkada were left inundated as a result.
Meanwhile, the waters of the Nilwala river have increased rapidly, causing one of the larger crocodiles that calls the Nilwala River its home to enter the Weraduwa area.
Following reports from locals in the area, and a lengthy operation, the predator was captured and later released into the Nilwala River.
Disaster Management and the Financial crisis
Meanwhile, Minister of Disaster Management Anura Priyadarshana Yapa revealed today that the economic damage from landslides in 2016 has been estimated at Rs. 10.4 billion.
2010 – Rs. 5500 million
2011 – Rs. 7000 million
2016 – Rs. 10400 million
