Defence Secretary meets protest representatives
The decision to grant service pensions was taken during a meeting held between Defence Secretary Karunasena Hettiarachchi and representatives of the soldiers engaged in the demonstration demanding for pensions, at the Ministry of Defence.
A special cabinet paper from the president regarding the granting of pensions has already been presented and the service pensions will be granted from February next year once the cabinet paper is approved.
Under the military law, disabled officers are entitled to a service pension upon completing ten years of service and other ranks are entitled for pension upon completing 12 years of service.
This pension scheme which is only entitled for disabled soldiers and not to any other state employee, is granted through the direct intervention of President Maithripala Sirisena.
The representatives of disabled soldiers who were content with the outcome of the meeting, had informed their fellow members of the decision thereby bringing the protest to an end.
