Family appeals to authorities after death of SL maid in Olaya camp

Information has come to light that a Sri Lankan woman who was being detained at the Olaya camp in Riyadh, Saudia Arabia, has died under suspicious circumstances.

Riyadh’s Olaya camp detainees include about 80 Sri Lankans who had experienced problems while working in Saudi Arabia.

old victim Palaniyandi Katpahavalli, who was being detained at Exit Camp Number 6 in Olaya had passed away on October 31 . The mother of three hailed from Sammalai in Maskeliya, Hatton.

She had left for Saudi Arabia in October last year, after receiving employment through a foreign employment agency in Colombo.

Recollecting her phone conversations with Palaniyandi Katpahavalli, the sister of the deceased stated that during her first days in Saudi Palaniyandi Katpahavalli,would call everyday and let them know that everything was fine.

Later she had revealed that there was trouble and had asked to be transferred to a different household.

On October 26, Palaniyandi Katpahavalli had called her family informed them that she had been chased and beaten by people at the camp who had placed heated iron rods on her skin.

When contacted by News1st, Azmi Thassim S,ri Lanka’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia said: “On the part of the embassy we have embarked on the necessary steps. If suspicious circumstances are involved then the post mortem examination and other such things have already commenced. The necessary steps are being taken.”

Meanwhile, the family of the deceased are seeking the assistance of the authorities to expedite the repatriation of her remains.
