President continues battle against tobacco, narcotics and drugs – addresses conference in India

President Maithripala Sirisena has urged the world community to resist the attempts of the tobacco industry to undermine tobacco control through litigation and interference in government policy-making.

He expressed these views during the Seventh Session of the Conference of Parties to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) held in Noida, India,

Signifying President Sirisena’s efforts in minimising the use of tobacco in the country, the World Health Organisation extended an invitation to the President to participate at the Framework Convention on Tobacco control in India as keynote speaker.

Thereby, President Sirisena addressed the convention which saw the participation of 1800 representatives of 186 signatory countries.

In his speech, President stated that a Presidential Task Force has been set up to monitor the drug and narcotics situation in the country. He added that a monthly review meeting is also being held to assess the progress and make multi-sectoral policies and plans.
