Authorities pool observations at Colombo workshop on promoting water re-use

A workshop hosted by the Ministry of City Planning and Water Supply with the objective of promoting water re-use commenced in Colombo on Tuesday, November 15.

The workshop has been organised in collaboration with the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) and the National Water Supply and Drainage Board.

It is themed Promoting efficient water management through water re-use and alternate water supply.

Minister of City Planning and Water Supply Rauff Hakeem said, Sri Lanka  is somewhat ahead of neighbours in our region as the quantity, quality, affordability and accessibility of water to the Sri Lanka population is way ahead of them.

“When it comes to sanitation, we are far ahead of our neighbors in providing proper sanitation facilities to almost 95% of Sri Lankan population”, he added.

On the other hand, the State Minister of City Planning and Water Supply Sudarshani Fernandopulle said, if at least half of our human population is left without adequate access to safe drinking water, it will certainly hamper not only the health of the people but the also the ongoing development around the world.

As a result, she said, better ways to manage water should be found in order to meet today’s demands and tomorrow’s challenges.

“This decline in construction of new capacity has occurred in spite of continuing projections for increased demand, suggesting that the strategy of fulfilling increased water demand by building large dams to capture water from fresh water streams is reaching its limit”, she added, “Together we need to promote greater re-use of water and alternative water supply for planning future water supply systems”.

The workshop which was attended by several foreign delegates involved in the field, will come to a close on Wednesday, November 16.
