Today November 15, Minister of Finance Ravi Karnanayake commented on the proposed traffic penalties, which has been in the centre of criticism by bus owners, three-wheeler drivers and motorcyclists.
“You saw the fuss that was made by the private bus owners. Now they came and said that they want to strike. Said no problem, go ahead and strike”, said Minister of Finance Ravi Karnanayake
The Minister of Finance said that today that the minimum fine amount was taken up in the cabinet, and that it was decided that the government will be imposing even further stringent laws on three or four areas, “but not on everything”.

According to the minister, the fine for driving without a licence will be increased from Rs. 500 to Rs. 25,000.
Furthermore, the minister clarified that the fine will not be Rs. 2500 for “crossing on an extra line that is there or parking in the wrong place” and also when driving without a revenue license.
“Even-though the government is poor, we will like it, but that is not our intention”, he added.
Minister Ravi Karunanayake also clarified that the government has no intention of changing the minimum fine revision. “Our intention is to ensure a law-abiding society and we will ensure that maximum fines are imposed to ensure that the law is maintained in the country.”
