“We understand the importance of the Indian concerns; we can’t specially act or engage in any activity which will threaten the security of India. That we know. We are in the region and India is a big power, is a big country,” President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has said in his very first international media interview.The President made the above remark in an hour-long extensive interview with Nitin A. Gokhale, Editor-in-Chief of ‘BharatShakti.in’ and India’s highly respected Strategic News International journal, in Colombo.The interview, which was his first solo media interaction as President, comes a few days ahead of his first overseas visit which is to New Delhi scheduled for later this week.The President also emphasised that “giving away the Hambantota port to China on a 99-year lease was a mistake by the previous government” adding the deal has to be renegotiated.
