What we are doing is what is right for the people of our country: Min.Sagala Ratnayaka

The inauguration of the Victims of Crime and Witness Assistance and Protection Division of the Sri Lanka Police was held in Colombo on Thursday. The event was organised by the National Authority for the Protection of Victims of Crime and Witnesses, in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Police Department.

Minister of Law and Order and Southern Development, Sagala Ratnayake, explained, that when talking about modernising laws, those who want to cause trouble politically misinterpret it or give it the wrong interpretation that this is playing to the tune of the international community.

“This is not what we are doing. What we are doing is what is right for the people of our country”,  said the minister. He explained that a lot of people are working very hard to take Sri Lanka forward and the people forward.

“I am very grateful to everybody who is doing this, having faith in the system”, he said and called on all those who are not understanding of this – purely because of political mischief, and  urged the media who also sometimes tends to go along with this- to not do this because “you are only pulling back the people of the country.

Minister of Justice and Buddha Sasana, Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe noted that when looking back at the last 18 month period, the allegations against police officers about their misconduct, maybe torture or anything, has been reduced by more than 90%.

“But I am not going to justify if there is any misdoing or omission or lapses on the part of the police”,  he said and further noted that if the rights of the victims and witnesses or not protected, then there will be anarchy situation.

He further explained that this happened in Sri Lanka and sometimes the victims take the law into their own hands because they have no confidence in this judicial system – that justice will be done -and unless there is a proper investigation and proper prosecution, either by the Attorney General or the police, then the conviction rate is very low and that is one of the criticisms against the judiciary .
