With election of a new president for the United States, what happens to the accords reached between Sri Lanka and the US ?
American firm Sandler, Travis and Rosenberg (ST&R) based in Washington DC signed an 18-month agreement with the Ministry of Development Strategies and internal trade on July 29.
Speaking to News 1st on an earlier occasion Secretary to the Ministry Chandani Wijeyawardena said that the objective of such agreements was to obtain tax concessions for post – conflict countries and to expand exports with the United States of America.
She noted that Cabinet agreed to the accord on June 14.
In order to enforce the 18 month accord, Sri Lanka must make a payment of 630,000 US Dollars.Professionals criticized the government’s move to reach this decision.
Convener of the Voice Against Corruption Wasantha Samarasinghe on the 22nd of August 2016 said
“… I have the agreement sent by mail. Payment must be made for 18 months to the tune of 630,000 US Dollars. That is around 90 Million rupees …”
“… Like many very other instances I do not see any justification in rushing into areas like this. There is no necessity for us to go and repeat the things the previous government did. How do we look at it today,we look at it today as a corrupt practice to take money from the government in an illegal way …”
