Leader of the JVP Anura Kumara Dissanayaka was a notable attendee at the 30th anniversary of the Ravaya newspaper, which was held on Tuesday November 15.
He said:
The Treasury takes away a portion of the wealth generated by the public and then a portion of that is looted from the Treasury. Thereafter, the wealth that should be directed to the Treasury is looted.
“This ring of corruption is far more stronger than you think. Can small movements defeat it?”, he queried.
On the other hand, President Maithripala said:
The ring that we have created against corruption, theft and fraud is not merely limited to fraud and corruption. If there are 100 expectations that we gave you and if stopping fraud, corruption, waste is only one of that, there is a ring for the remaining 99 as well. So how can we break through these rings without a two third majority in Parliament”.
He went on to note that if he can run a government with a cabinet of just 30 persons, he will do it tomorrow itself – and that in that case he would be the happiest. That at the August parliamentary elections votes were cast for the United National Front for 106 of the 225 seats to create a new constitution and the fulfill those expectations and if he had not taken the post of Chairman of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party to pass bills with the two thirds majority – the result would be devastating.
“There is strong criticism over the appointments I made through the National List. Several Ministers from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party who assisted me in carrying forward the temporary government were defeated by a group of MPs from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and not by the People. Mahinda Rajapaksa defeated them”, he said, “I must create a government with the results of the August 17th election”.
The president also said that he must create a government with 106 MPs, to pass a new constitution. I need to have a two thirds majority and needs my trustworthy persons at that point in the government and in order to carry this forward, he said.
