The Cabinet has decided against the 30% hike in water tariffs.
According to the Minister of Petroleum and Petroleum Gas Chandima Weerakkody, the cabinet has decided against the 30% hike in water rates, deeming it “inappropriate and unreasonable“.
Explaining the decision, the minister said that the water board “should fuction on its own income” and that they should provide water on a concessionary rate.
The minister pointed out that the government can earn an additional income of Rs. 1.5 billion by increasing the rates. However, he questioned on charging the increased amount from those who already struggle to pay their bills.
“We have received various ideas and proposals on this, including ones that involve raising the prices for those who can afford it and providing concessions for the rest. We considered all this and reached a decision on behalf of the people”, he added
