The University Grants Commission said that the number of students who will be enrolled for the external degree will be equal to the number of students who are enrolled as internal students of the relevant faculty.
The Acting Chairman of the UGC, Prof. P. SM Gunaratne said that this decision was made in order prevent a large number of students being enrolled for the external degree.
In addition, it has been observed that there are many problems on the standards of the external degree provided by many universities which have many students enrolled for it. Accordingly, the University Grants Commission said the quality of teaching facilities of external degree enrolled students will be raised to a higher level.
