A national ceremony to commemorate the elimination of Malaria in Sri Lanka was held in Colombo on the morning of Wednesday, November 30.
Representatives of the health sector and the World Health Organisation were present for the event.
Those who contributed to achieve the certification of Sri Lanka as a malaria free country were felicitated at the ceremony.
WHO Regional Director for Southeast Asia, Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh presented the certificate officially declaring Sri Lanka a Malaria-free country, to Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne.
The World Health Organisation officially certified Sri Lanka on having eliminated malaria on September 5, 2016.
The announcement of Sri Lanka’s achievement was made at the WHO Southeast Asia Region’s annual Regional Committee meeting which was held in Sri Lanka, in the presence of health ministers and senior health officials from all eleven member states.
