An event themed Policy Dialogue on Cyber Security – Addressing Cyber Violence against Women and Girl Children was held in BMICH on Tuesday November 29.
The policy dialogue on cyber security, organised by the United Nations Gender Theme Group was held to contribute towards the development of a stringent cyber security policy, legislation and regulatory framework in the country that recognises the special needs of women and girl children.
The panelists analysed trends in cyber-crimes against women and girls, gaps in current legal and institutional measures in addressing cyber crimes.
Making an address Chairperson of the National Child Protection Authority Natasha Balendra said that their task force together with the police, the Justice Ministry, CERT and ICTA are focussing on effectively and expediently implementing the law as it is, so that as soon as they receive a complaint they will prioritise and proceed with the criminal actions.
“Children are not really willing to initiate criminal proceedings because there is fear of repercussions from family, school, community”, she said. “What they are looking for really is counselling and guidance, so we have tried to reach out to the counselling community, but we are finding that even the counselling community is not up-to date on these issues”.
She went on to note that from next year onwards they are hoping to train and to have a back-up group of counselors that they can refer the children to.
