President says he is ready to unite all leftists movements for victory of the SLFP

Speaking in Galle on Saturday, President Maithripala Sirisena emphasised that he is ready to commit himself to unite all leftist movements to steer the Sri Lanka Freedom Party towards victory.

“I can fearlessly say that there is no one in the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, and in the country, who committed himself as I did,  to make Mahinda Rajapaksa victorious. We were able to win the war”,  he said

He added that even though terrorism was defeated, the ideologies of the LTTE were not – and this caused problems in the country and countries all around the world pointed fingers.

He further noted that as a person who has been involved in politics for a long period of time, there was the need to clear Mahinda Rajapaksa and the tri-forces of the charges of human rights abuse brought against them.

“I defected from government and contested the election as the common candidate”, said the President who went on to add that 49 days later, the people of this country elected ‘me’ as their president.

He further stated that the first responsibility,  as members of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, must be to strengthen the party and that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party was defeated twice last year – the Presidential Election and the General Election.

he said

He explained that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party lost because the reasons for its defeat had been created in the country – and some question if a government can be established by strengthening the party.
