PM says digital economy is being given priority

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe addressed the the inauguration of the 15th Asia-Pacific Conference of German Business 2016. Dignitaries including leading legal draftsmen, experts, entrepreneurs and journalists attended the conference,  held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Prime Minister explained that the digital economy is one sector that is being given priority,  because focus is on adding value in the digital industry and for this free WiFi centres, at least a 1000 in the first round, have been introduced around the country; while concessionary loans are being given for university students to buy laptops  – and the number of of institutes that are giving IT training has been increased

The premier pointed out that there is need for more engineers,  and investments in IT education is welcome,  while having 13 year compulsory education. And within the next two years upper secondary students will be given tablets free of charge

Meanwhile,  Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe held bilateral discussions with the Vice Chancellor of Germany Sigmar Gabriel. The Prime Minister’s Office said during the discussions, Germany’s Vice Chancellor had assured support to regain the GSP+ concession to the European Union.

The Prime Minister and several other state leaders participated in a breakfast meeting held in line with the inauguration ceremony.
