Parliamentarian Gunawardena to seek legal measures against budget proposal

Speaking to the media on Sunday, UPFA Parliamentarian Bandula Gunawardena said that he will seek legal measures against a budget proposal.

UPFA parliamentarian, Bandula Gunawardena noted that on the day of the budget proposal, the Finance Minister had issued written orders to banks informing them to be ready to do transactions with this system of payments – and this had also been issued to departments including Customs.

“We will immediately go to the Supreme Court regarding the matter of section 390 of the budget, which is a proposal that completely undermines trust in the country’s financial system”,  he said.

He further pointed out that prices of goods in a country is the general rate and it will not reduce anywhere in the world, and if that happens the whole world will collapse.

He recalled that in 1977, a yard of cloth was two rupees and twelve cents and a coconut was 70 cents, A packet of milk was four rupees and 80 cents and Mr Bandaranaike pawned his ancestral mansion for 15,000 rupees for the election.

“This is the price of goods. No government will ever be able to reduce it”, he said

He was questioned on his statement made previously where it was said that a family can live with just Rs.2500

“That was not what I meant.”he replied

He went on to add that students at faculties live with Rs.2500, and it had to be increased that to 3500.

“I said that a person can live without dying with 2500, so increase it to 3500. And now it has been increased to 3500”, he added. He further noted that just because such a statement was made for the sake of the students in the country who are suffering, it is unfair to use it for political mud-slinging.
