The National Water Supply and Drainage Board has decided to impose the price increase in the water bill from December 1.
The charges were increased as per a gazette notification issued on November 2. The amendment in prices will affect all domestic water users excluding Samurdhi beneficiaries.
The tariff for five units has been increased by Rs.8, while the monthly charge has been increased by Rs. 200. The tariff for six to ten units will be increased by Rs.5 and the monthly charge will be increased by Rs.185.
Trade unions charge that though the increase in the water bill is carried out once every three years, This time around, the increase has been done because the government has slashed the funds for water projects.
