Minor floods reported from areas in Galle and Matara

The highest rainfall in the past 24 hours was recorded in Ketandola Galle, with a reading of 165.1 mm.The Department of Meteorology says that a rain fall reading of 163. 7 mm was recorded in Baddegama, Galle while a reading of 114.6 mm was recorded in the Thalangahawatte area.

The Southern Province is under immense threat owing to adverse weather conditions. Heavy damages were reported in Kabaragala, Angulugaha after a mound of earth had collapsed onto a house.The disaster was captured on the mobile phone of the owner of the house.

Our correspondent said that no casualties were reported following the incident. Meanwhile, five house were damaged in Imaduwa following an earth-slip.

The mountains in Bategoda, Imaduwa is now under an imminent threat of a possible landslide.

Vehicular movement along the Imaduwa – Akuressa main road was restricted following a landslide along the Imaduwa – Akuressa main road.The Alapahala junction in the Galle Dikkumbura road has been inundated owing to the rains.

The Disaster Management Centre says that water levels of the Gin and Nilwala rivers are rising rapidly due to the incessant rains.Our correspondent said that the water levels were at 4.2 metres by 7 a.m on Monday, November 7. .

The Baddegama – Nagoda road and the Baddegama – Adhaliya main road have been flooded.Our correspondent said that the low lying areas located on either sides of the Gin river have been flooded.

A three-storey house located in Yakkala Vidhiyawatte area along the Colombo – Kandy main road has collapsed.Our correspondent said that a shop which was built on the first floor of the building was declared open yesterday.

The building had collapsed at midnight. No causalities have been reported.
