Investigations to be launched to ascertain ‘Aava’ group connections

Speaking in parliament today, State Minister of Defence Ruwan Wijewardene said that investigations will be conducted to determine whether there are any connections between army deserters, and the group known as ‘Aava’, that is active in Jaffna.

This statement was made in response to a question raised by JVP MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake in Parliament today.

The minister also stated that three suspects had already been arrested. One individual has been identified as a Tamil army deserter.

Minister of Law and Order Sagala Ratnayaka, commenting on the issue, stated that the leader of the Aava group was currently in custody.

He also noted that a majority of the Aava members are between the ages of 18 and 25.
