Foreign Employment Minister elaborates on pension scheme for SL migrant worker

Minister of Foreign Employment Thalatha Athukorale stated that a pension scheme for Sri Lankan migrant workers will be introduced by the beginning of next year.

Minister Athukorale made this statement in an exclusive interview with News1st on Thursday.

She noted that at the Presidential Election, the combined election manifesto with the UNP and the president, gave three promises for migrant workers and that was to have a welfare scheme for the migrant families, to implement a pension scheme and the third was 2.5 interest added to their NRFC accounts.

She further noted that the first promise was implemented on January 8, regarding migrant families’ welfare while the second promise, he pension scheme for migrant workers would hopefully be launched on January 8.

“We have to present it in parliament” explained the minister who went on to add that “the Legal Draftsman Department will have to approve this therefore it might get delayed but it will be done.”

“If we fail on the 8th, within the first three months we will do it” said the minister.
