Over the past decade, more than 800 journalists have been killed on their endeavor to bring information and news to the public. However only one in ten cases has seen a conviction.
In November,2013 the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution A/RES/68/163 at its 68th session which declared the 2nd of November as the ‘International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists’.
The resolution called on member states to implement precise measure to counter the culture of impunity.
Why November 2nd?
The date was chosen in commemoration of the assassination of two French journalists ,Claude Verlon and Ghislane Dupont in Mali on 2 November 2013.
The Resolution
The resolution condemns all attacks and acts of violence against journalists and media workers while also urging member states to do their best to prevent such violence and to ensure accountability, bring to justice perpetrators of crimes against journalists and media workers, and ensure that victims have access to appropriate remedies.
It also calls on the member states to promote a safe and enabling environment for journalists to perform their work independently and without unnecessary interference.
