The event was organised by the United Nations Association together with the Ministry of External Affairs and the United Nations in Sri Lanka.
UN Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka,Una McCauley said that the UN in Sri Lanka will change because the times are changing – and Sri Lanka is changing – and now this is a middle income country and it has peace as well as a degree of prosperity, and the UN will change as Sri Lanka does.
She further explained that when thinking about what the UN will be doing in Sri Lanka in the next five or six years, the focus is on sustainable development goals which the United Nations Association will be working on
“Its a time when complexity challenges everything we do”, she said.
She added that it is also time when hatred, violence and fear really capture a lot of how the people around the world are feeling, and Sri Lanka has the moment in which it can stand up and say that it is moving towards reconciliation.
“We are moving towards a sustainable development model that manages both the traditional, the agriculture, the development policies along with a very modern society, ” said the UN Resident Coordinator
