Recent incidents have no threat to the security – Police

Top officials of the Sri Lankan Police today (3rd March) while condemning the baseless statements by some interested parties assured that the country’s security has not been threatened due to a few incidents which took place recently.

Referring to the recent incidents that took place in Kalutara and at Mt. Lavinia court premises, the Police Media Spokesman DIG Priyantha Jayakodi said that the Law and Order of the country has not been weakened at any time.

 

He was addressing media this evening at the Department of Government Information.

 

He said, the Police are investigating these incidents and expect to arrest the suspects immediately.

 

According to DIG Jayakodi, the number of crimes of the country has been reduced approximately by 3,000 during 2015 and 2016. As well, the percentage of resolving the crime cases has also increased from 59% to 71% during the same period.

 


Addressing media at this occasion, DIG Ajith Rohana said that the Sri Lanka Police together with the related institutions such as the Prison Department, court, Ministry of Justice, and other relevant ministries will implement a program to prevent such criminal activities in the future. He said that they would assess the threat that the suspects have and will take action to provide necessary protection. Assistance from the Special Task Force (STF) will also be received on special occasions, he added.

 


According to him, steps will also be taken to stop the circulation of the illegal weapons throughout the country with the intention of reducing crimes. He further added that special vigil would be kept on the criminals who were released after punishment and are on bail.

 

Speaking further regarding the above incidents the DIG said the Police do not escape from the responsibility, which it has in this regard.

 

2,000 murders have been reported in 2006 and it has reduced up to 394 by 2016.
