Road safety awareness programme hits the road in Dambulla

A national road safety awareness programme, aimed at reducing the loss of life and property damage caused by road accidents which occur on a daily basis, got underway in Dambulla today.

The Safer Roads campaign organised by News 1st, is supported by the Sri Lanka Police.

Violating traffic rules and negligent driving not only claims hundreds of lives, it also has a severely detrimental effect on the children, parents and families of the victims.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Health, 29,630 road accidents have occurred between January and September this year..

In this ten month period alone, 2,019 fatal accidents and 6,142 serious accidents were reported.

11,132 minor accidents were reported, while 10,266 instances of property damage have also been reported.

Recognising the impact of this serious issue on our society, News 1st commenced the Safer Roads campaign in Dambulla today.

The large crowd that gathered for the rally and awareness programme walked from the Dambulla Bus Stop to the Town Hall.

Senior officers of the Sri Lanka Police, three-wheeler drivers, bus drivers and numerous motorists, participated in the awareness programme.

The next phase of the Safer Roads campaign will be held in Tangalle.
