Chief Medical Officer of the Prisons Hospital Lakshman Jayamanne responded to the statement made by UNP Parliamentarian Hirunika Premachandra in Parliament on Tuesday December 6.
He said, he is disappointed as he expected an educated woman like Hirunika to find all facts correctly before speaking. He also stated that he is saddened by the inconvenience caused to himself and his family.
“We as state officials who have the capability and willingness to serve honestly, will not be discouraged by incidents of this nature”, he said. “We are helpless during occasions like this. It is disappointing”, he added.

Journalist : Minister, something that the entire country is largely aware of is that there is a particular doctor at the remand prison who obtains a sum of money to refer high profile politicians to the Prisons Hospital when they are remanded. What is the truth behind this?
Minister : I do not know for certain if it was done for money or for political reasons, but I have conducted an investigation in this regard and I will tell you the details of this investigation. Details of one doctor has come to light.
Journalist : MP Hirunika Premachandra also said that ten out of the seventeen doctors at the Prisons Hospital are involved in this. She also said that you have been informed of this as well but no action was taken.
Minister : We have commenced investigations.
Journalist : Minister, she also said that the judge who visited Former MP Duminda Silva has been given paid leave. What action is being taken in this regard?
Minister : She was suspended immediately and investigations are underway. That was caught red handed. You cannot be a judge like that can you?
