Britain and France called for the session, which Russia’s U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin criticized as a “propaganda campaign.”
“For the sake of humanity, we call on, we plead with the parties and those with influence to do everything in their power to protect civilians and enable access to the besieged part of eastern Aleppo before it becomes one giant graveyard,” UN humanitarian chief Stephen O’Brien told council members during the meeting
French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, who was involved in calling the meeting said that if the war is not resolved it would be “biggest massacres on a civilian population since World War Two.”
The U.N. special envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura, and its undersecretary general for humanitarian affairs, Stephen O’Brien, briefed the council with updates on the situation and condemned the level of government attacks on rebel-held areas and pleading for a cease-fire that would allow humanitarian access.
Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that more than 50,000 people have fled eastern Aleppo in the past four days.
The UN security council is under immense pressure with the international community is calling for an urgent political solution to end the war, however has been constantly hindered with Russia using its veto power as one of five permanent members to block resolutions.
Russia is the most powerful ally that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime can call on and has carried out airstrikes since September 2015 . But Moscow has not tried to put distance between itself and the current assault, claiming that it hasn’t bombed the city since October 18. The Russian Defense Ministry said that the Syrian army had cleared Castello Road, a key artery and supply line in Aleppo, so the United Nations can deliver humanitarian aid.
UN humanitarian adviser Jan Egeland , however said the United Nations already is bringing aid to parts of western Aleppo, and that Castello Road “does not give access to the besieged parts of east Aleppo.”
British P.M Theresa May has called on Russia to act and described the situation in Aleppo as “horrific”.
“We want to see a cessation of hostilities. We want to see opportunity for humanitarian aid to have access to Aleppo, and we will be pressing for that at the UN Security Council,” she said in Parliament.
