Hours after the authorities said they had grabbed a suspect in the deadly truck rampage at a Christmas market in Berlin, they acknowledged they may have detained the wrong man and began a desperate search for the actual driver.
The Islamic State (IS) has said one of its militants carried out the lorry attack on a Berlin Christmas market, which left twelve (12) people dead.
German prosecutors have freed the only suspect, citing insufficient evidence. He was identified by media only as Pakistani national Naved B.
However before the suspect was released, German officials said they could not be sure if he was involved in the attack.
Meanwhile the decision to release the suspect and the Islamic State’s claim of responsibility for the attack inflicted a damaging blow to Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government.
After suffering a series of attacks Germany has been in fear of further violence. They were realized when a lorry ploughed into the Berlin Christmas market, killing 12 people and injuring 48.
