Two million votes and counting as Hillary’s lead in the popular vote increases or will a re-count make any difference for America?
In an unprecedented turn of events, Hillary Clinton’s lead in the popular vote has just surpassed two million votes.
We all remember what happened on Election day. The drama, the suspense, the disbelief as a political outsider took the country by storm and secured the nation’s most powerful post.
From the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency, President-elect Trump secured over 290 votes to Clinton’s 232. Clinton conceded the victory to Trump while having a very slim lead in the popular vote (47.7%-47.5%), but this Wednesday the vote count had increased in Clinton’s favour and she now leads in the popular vote by 48.1% – 46.6%, which adds up to over 2 million votes.
While the Clinton camp has been strangely silent, Green party candidate Jill Stein has raised enough money, close to $1.3 million, in order to get recounts in the key states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin. Even though this recent activity will probably have no effect on decision made on election day, its is making the public seriously question the effectiveness of the electoral college.
In fact, several Democrats have reportedly agreed to break with tradition and vote against Donald Trump when the Electoral College meets on December 19 in an unlikely attempt to block his presidency.
It is extremely rare for an elector to go against the will of their state’s people and in fact most are bound by state law to follow the popular vote, but that hasn’t stopped some Democratic electors from trying to lobby voters in other states to vote against Trump.
They would need 37 Republican electors to vote against Trump, and while the GOP candidate hasn’t garnered the full support of his party in the past, it seems highly unlikely that they will turn on him at this juncture.
