Thousands protest cut-backs on social programs in Brazil

Thousands of demonstrators protested against cutbacks to social programs outside Congress on Tuesday (29th November) in Brazil

Police had used tear gas and pepper spray to disperse the protesters. According to Reuters protesters burned three cars, smashed windows on government buildings and threw rocks at police on the ministry-lined central esplanade of Brasilia.

According to a police spokeswoman, around 10,000 protesters – from students and landless peasants to supporters of the leftist Workers Party and labour union activists – descended on Congress ahead of the decision.

2016-11-27t211041z_80789744_rc15e7c9aa30_rtrmadp_3_brazil-politicsThe demonstration took a violent turn when when some demonstrators overturned a car and knocked over plastic toilet booths which forced the police to take action against the the protesters in order to protect Congress.An undisclosed number of protesters were arrested for vandalism and spraying graffiti on government buildings.

Brazil’s leftist opposition charged that the spending cap proposed by President Michel Temer would cripple public education and health services in Brazil. Many demonstrators carried the red flags of the Workers Party, which has called for protests against Temer’s measures which are meant to restore fiscal discipline and control a widening budget deficit.

The demonstration was also aimed at lawmakers seeking an amnesty from prosecution for taking kickbacks in the massive corruption scandal surrounding state-controlled oil company Petrobras.

The Senate is expected to vote for a extreme public spending ceiling in a first-round later on Tuesday. If it clears a final vote on Dec.13th the measure would limit spending to the rate of inflation for up to 20 years
