The Seven Violations: Relatives of accident victims react to Rs. 25,000 minimum fine

The Rs. 25,000 minimum fine decided upon seven traffic violations has been the talk of the town after the decision was made public.

THE SEVEN:

1. Driving under the influence of alcohol
2. Driving without a valid driver’s licence
3. Allowing a person who does not have a valid driver’s license to drive a vehicle
4. Excessive speed
5. Overtaking from the left
6. Violating railway crossing rules
7. Driving without an insurance certificate.

Given the ripples the topic was making, we decided to inquire the public about the decision…

Relatives of victims killed in motor accidents speak out:

“My son got a three-wheeler even when he did not have a driving licence. He died while he was driving that three-wheeler. If the newly imposed law was in place back then, my son would still be alive.”

“I lost my child. I dont want this to happen to anyone else. At the moment you are only able to find out about drunk drivers. But my child did not die because of someone who was under the influence of alcohol. We have realised that the person behind my child’s death was on drugs”

“My husband and I were run over by a Tipper. My husband passed away on the 26th of September. I was in a critical situation. Back then. the road safety rules were not rigid. But today the authorities have imposed strict rules. I believe that these strict rules should continue. I request the authorities to not let someone else go through what I did.”

A number breakdown by State Minister of Finance

Daily fatalities due to motor accidents – 7
2015 to present – over 23,000 motor accidents, over 24,000 fatalities

“So, I would like to ask if it is wrong to formulate certain disciplinary measures to make sure the law is practiced in the country?” questioned Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena.
