The supplementary estimate of Rs.790 million that was presented in parliament which included the purchasing of vehicles for ministers has come under heavy criticism from civil society organisations.
Parliamentary approval was sought to purchase vehicles for seven ministers, twelve deputy ministers, eight state ministers, and the opposition leader at an amount of Rs.791.5 million.
Civil society organisations expressed their views on the proposal.
Convenor for the National Movement for a Just Society, Saman Rathnapriya added that a majority of the government income is earned by the expatriate workers where the poor mothers go abroad, undergo many hardships and toil to send back the money to increase the national income of the country. And when looking at the estate workers and even the fisherfolk, they are on the brink of poverty.
“We have been unable to come up with a system to bring these people up from that level”, he said. He explained that in that situation the question that is being faced is whether the suggestion to bring in luxury vehicles worth Rs.790 million is a pertinent and just suggestion.
