Professional economists write to president over Draft National Trade Policy

The Sri Lanka Association for Political Economy or SLAPE which is a body of professional economists, has written to the President, the Prime Minister and the Minister of International Trade Malik Smarawickreme regarding the Draft National Trade Policy.

SLAPE had organised a panel discussion regarding the said policy recently. The association says that the it was revealed that the draft national trade policy has not been guided by a solid national development vision.

Economic Expert, Prof. Sumanasiri Liyanage pointed out that this industrial policy document was prepared not as a kind of a policy document but as the kind of giving legitimacy to the ETCA agreement. And what they are suggesting is the policy priority should be reversed you have to start with industrial policy then trade policy should be subordinated to it; and within which it can be discussed what kind of bilateral and multilateral discussions should be and can be signed
