Today marks one year since the demise of Venerable Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero, the founder of the National Movement for a Just Society.
A memorial was held in remembrance of Venerable Maduluwawe Sobitha thero at the Foundation Institute in Colombo with the participation of President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and other political leaders.
A minute of silence was observed in remembrance of the late Thero. The official proceedings began following religious observances.
The president noted that there were a number of proposal made during professor Sarath Wijeysuriya’s lecture and that these recommendations will be discussed with the Prime Minister in order to implement them – and obstacles faced by these recommendations when being implemented will also be looked at
With regard to a special court being implemented, the President added that discussions have been engaged for several months, and in such a complicated backdrop, actions like this should be taken in consultation with everyone, so that the problems that could crop up can be resolved
“This memorial has turned into an event where the president and I are being questioned on what we have done”, charged Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The premier explained that the president suggested that the 19th Amendment be repealed and everyone agreed on establishing an independent commission but there was a different opinion on who should be the members of these commissions and now a new constitution will have to be established.
