Speaking in Parliament on Monday, November 28, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe noted that a proposal has been put forward to increase the allowance paid to MPs to Rs.100,000.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said that a proposal has been put forward to increase the allowance paid to MPs to Rs.100,000 to be spent on their constituents and that it is not for their personal use.
“A sum of two to three hundred thousand is paid to maintain their offices”, he said. “There are gift expenses when you go for a wedding or anything for that matter, but we don’t have that”.
He went on to note that since they couldn’t come up with one single amount, they recommended that a sum of 100,000 be given out in order for every Parliamentarian to do their work – and that it is an additional allowance.
“What I opine is that the salary should also be increased, but that has not been done as yet”, he said.
