Paris Climate agreement comes in to action; becomes International Law

The Paris agreement on Climate change comes in to action and becomes International law

Governments have agreed to global temperature rise to two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels – and preferably 1.5 degrees.

Marking the deal coming in to force, the Eiffel Tower in Paris is expected to be lit up in green light on Friday.

Delegates from around 200 countries are meeting in Marrakech next week to consider the future beyond Paris.

The deal agreed on in the French capital less than a year ago calls on governments to commit to move their economies away from fossil fuels. UN review of national pledges to cut carbon ,on Thursday,said they fall short of the levels needed to keep the rise in global temperatures under 2C.

congress_greenhouse_gases_73The report found pledges from governments that have ratified the accord would see the world on track for a rise in temperatures by the end of this century of between 2.9 and 3.4 degrees C.

As of November 2016, 192 states and the European Union have signed the Agreement. 97 of those parties have ratified or acceded to the Agreement, most notably China, the United States and India, the countries with three of the largest greenhouse gas emissions of the signatories’ total (about 42% together)

Sri Lanka also signed on the Paris Climate agreement on the 22nd of April 2016 and greed on 0.05% of green house gases for ratification
