The inauguration ceremony of SLFP membership promotion programme in Maharagama, commenced under the auspices of President Maithripala Sirisena on Thursday, November 3.
A large group comprising of party seniors were present for this event.
A new SLFP Membership Card was introduced for the new members of the party.The President presented cards to the new members of the party to mark the occasion.
“Our duty and responsibility is to strengthen the Sri Lanka Freedom party”, said the President
He added that when engaging in political campaigns, priorities must be understood and given to the country – and the people – and as a country with multi-party system that is free and democratic, the force to strengthen the Sri Lanka Freedom Party for the country and the people must be taken forward and this responsibility lies with the members of the SLFP
He further added that the image of politicians was tarnished due to ‘their’ behaviour. Therefore if anyone serving for a political party wants to save the party, take it forward and achieve victory, one should be exemplary in character.
He went on to note that some say that the government will collapse in the near future but that will not happen
“You cannot build a government by having the party at a weak point. Let’s strengthen the party. Let’s bring the people together. Let’s present a better programme,” said the president
He pointed out that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party needs to be confident that it can overcome the challenges in creating a Sri Lanka Freedom Party-led government in the future.
He also stated that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party founded by the late SWRD Bandaranaike tumbled and rose, time and time again, in the face of challenges.
“This is a historic political party and no one can challenge it”, said President Sirisena
The Chief Minister of the Western Province, Isura Devapriya presented a special memento to the president on behalf of the SLFP members of the Maharagama electorate.
