New Delhi ranks among the world’s most polluted cities, with air quality usually worsening at this time of year, when smoke from firecrackers and crops burnt in nearby states envelops the city of 16 million.
Farmers in New Delhi’s neighboring Punjab and Haryana states set fire to paddy stubble in their fields after cultivating their crops as part of slash and burn.
Due to fireworks, toxins and harmful compounds like sulphur dioxide, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, manganese, cadmium are released in the air and can lead to adverse impact on lungs, causing numerous respiratory ailments.
