Govt is beginning to interfere in affairs of the monetary board through the budget : W.A. Wijeyawardene

Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank, W.A. Wijewardena says that the government is beginning to interfere in the affairs of the Monetary board through the budget.

He expressed these sentiments during a special seminar held in Colombo on Friday evening.

Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka W.A. Wijewardena noted that a dangerous situation has been created through this budget, adding that the Minister of Finance has begun to interfere in the affairs of the Monetary Board.

”The collection of revenue takes place under the monetary board, and a new mechanism for this purpose is being developed. However,through the budget the Minister of Finance announced that he is creating a new system, with the assistance of ICTA. Through this system all government institutes that pay taxes and even institutes like the Department of Customs as well as private institutions have to make their tax payments through this system”, added W. A. Wijewardena.
