An event was held in Colombo on Thursday, November 24, to raise awareness among the state officials with regard to the Right to Information Act,
The event was held under the auspices of the Deputy Minister of Media and Parliamentary Reforms Karunarathna Paranawithana.
He stated that no official can take disciplinary action against any other officer just because information was given out, and that when an officer sees irregularities and corruption being carried out, that officer can give out such information.
“He or she can give it to either Ministry of Media or any other person for that matter”, he added. “The officer can give it to a minister or the parliament, or even to his or her acquaintance. They cannot take any measures against such individuals”.
He went on to note that the circular was issued by the Public Administration before, but now a need has come to make amendments to such things.
