The decision taken by the government to discourage the use of three-wheelers was based on a number of economic and social factors, according to the Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake. He said that not having a proper monitoring system for three-wheelers as a self-employment avenue has caused these issues.
Minister made these remarks on Saturday (26th Nov.) addressing a meeting with the three-wheeler owners and the drivers held at Ceynor, Colombo. A large number of participants representing island-wide three-wheeler owners and the drivers joined the meeting.
Addressing them, the minister pointed out that it was a timely necessity to monitor the three-wheeler service of the country and it will be more efficient if proposals are presented by the owners and drivers.
Minister further added that steps would be taken to discourage only the new comers but, not the current members. It would not affect them anyway. Those who have a three-wheeler so far would not have to face any difficulties when obtaining a loan from the financial institutions and the minister asked the drivers to inform if any such institution is discouraging them when obtaining a loan.
