Civil and political activists have charged that the Foreign Minister and the Deputy Foreign Minister are not of the same stance regarding certain matters.
By certain matters, they are pointing out the contradicting views of the Foreign Minister and the Deputy Foreign Minister regarding the recent US Presidential Election. Yes, it does not appear to be a relevant matter to the people of Sri Lanka, nor is it a ‘big deal’.
However, this is the Foreign Minister and his Deputy, the two who represents the country in the international arena as well as ministers who represent the government before the people of Sri Lanka. And as representatives of the government, are they not having policies which are completely different to one another?

Deputy Foreign Minister Dr. Harsha de Silva has stated to the newspaper that Sri Lanka will have a new opportunity due to the political transformation in the United States of America. He has also pointed out that the benefits will be reaped in the future.
The Deputy Foreign Minister is of the view that Sri Lanka is at an advantage with the cancellation of the Trans Pacific Partnership and the creation of a new programme with the change in administration in the US.

In an interview with the Daily Mirror, Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera stated that as a person who has fought for liberal values throughout his political career, he would like to have seen a different result from the US Presidential election.
