Authorities turn a blind eye when elephants storm into our villages: Ampara residents charge

Residents in Malwatte settlement in Ampara charge that the authorities have turned a blind eye to the aggravating human – elephant conflict. Crops and cultivation in the Malwatte settlement were destroyed by wild elephants on Wednesday night.

A herd of around 20 wild elephants from the Buddangala Reserve had destroyed the crops. The locals in question put their lives at risk in order to chase away these elephants in order to protect their cultivations. The locals attempts were supported by personnel from the Civil Defence Force.

Locals also charge that wild life officials deliberately avoid visiting villages during such situations. They add that the number of times that wild elephants had stormed into the village is more than the visits undertaken by officials to their village.
