STF arrests nine individuals in Hasalaka

Nine people who had allegedly been engaged in sand-mining in violation of mining permits, in the Weraganthota area in Gangewatta, Hasalaka have been arrested.

The Police Special Task Force said that along with the relevant individuals, one tipper truck filled with sand, eight shovels, three boats and five metal buckets were seized.

Meanwhile, the STF said that another individual has been arrested on the same charges in Hapugasyaya, Naula and the truck filled with sand used by him was also seized.

Meanwhile, four police officers from the Dankotuwa Police Station have been transferred with immediate effect.

Police said that this step was taken as the relevant police officers did not follow protocol when dealing with boats used for illegal sand-mining. A police inspector, sub inspector, sergeant and a police constable are among those transferred.
