Among those present for the opening of the new six-storey building was former president Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga as well as several ministers and parliamentarians.

The building was constructed at a cost of  Rs.106 million, with the assistance of Sanasa in Gampaha.

Speaking during the event, the President said that they were able to pass the act on the drug policy after the government came into the power, and following that they are in the process of preparing the regulations for the implementation of that act.

The president went on to note that the new gazette was published to ensure that the ordinary people will be able to obtain essential drugs of high quality at an affordable price.

” It is reported that there is a shortage of drugs in the country at present. It is said that drug stores are not selling some drugs. There are some local companies that manufacture western drugs who say that they cannot sell the drug at the new prices. I also heard that some have stopped importing those drugs …” sad President Sirisena during the event.

Meanwhile speaking at the event former president Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge said that People’s Bank and Bank of Ceylon which had suffered loss when she came to power in 1994, were converted into profit-making ventures at the time she left.

”However, both institutions were suffering losses when the President took over. This is a joke – the way things are going they might even blame me for these losses. I believe it is better to convert these banks into private institutes, because they are affected each time a government changes ”,  pointed out former president Chandrika Bandaranake Kumaratunge.

She also said that she didn’t have much money at the time she stepped down from her position and  only three million rupees was left in her account.

” Mahinda Rajapaksa cut away all the benefits that I was entitled to as a former head of state …” said the former president.
