Police FCID was established legally – Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court determines

The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court has determined that the Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division was established legally.

Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne stated that the Police FCID was established by the IGP, through a gazette, in accordance with the police ordinance.

The order was issued when attorneys appearing on behalf of parliamentarian Jayantha Samaraweera made submissions in connection with a case filed by the FCID against the parliamentarian.

The attorneys appearing on behalf of Jayantha Samaraweera argued that the police FCID does not have the legal right to arrest and produce suspects before court.

This argument however, was rejected by court today.
