President Maithripala Sirisena says the Government has taken a policy decision to continue paying the monthly salary for all the differently-abled war heroes, even after their retirement.
He made these remarks addressing the Gallantry Awards 2016 held at the BMICH, on Thursday (27th Oct.).
The President recalled that even though the Government took this decision last year, the proposal could only be prepared for submission for inclusion in the 2017 Budget Proposal as some persons with vested political interests used the differently-abled war heroes to stage protests.
President Sirisena also emphasized that whatever allegations were leveled against him he will not change his policy on national security. He also said that he always completely committed to provide necessary resources for the Tri Forces and to strengthen the security forces, as well as to protect their dignity.
“As the President of the country as well as the Defence Minister, I would never underestimate the importance of national security and despite the opportunist acts done by some section of the society, who do not have a proper understanding regarding the forward journey of the country, I would continue to safeguard the nation,” the President further said.
The President also stressed that he is not ready to handle the country’s national security according to the wills of non-governmental organizations.
“The Government will act in accordance with a more friendly and pleasant international policy framework to defeat persons, whose ideologies were not defeated even though military the separatists were defeated. Those who are dreaming of achieving expectations which can never be achieved living out of the country, “ he added.
During the ceremony the Parama Weera Vibushanaya, Weerodara Vibushanaya, Weera Wickrema Vibushanaya, Rana Wickrema Padakkama and Rana Sura Padakkama were awarded to the officers and other ranks of the Armed Forces for their exemplary great service.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Minister Sarath Fonseka, State Minister of Defence, Ruwan Wijewardene , Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Tri-Forces Commanders, hierarchy of the Armed Forces and politicians too were present.
