COPE chairman’s report approved with majority vote

The report presented by the Chairman of the Committee on Public Enterprises or COPE was approved with a majority of votes on Friday.

However, the UNP members of the COPE committee had voiced their objection against the report and had reached a decision to submit one or more reports in this regard as well.

Member of COPE, MP Bimal Rathnayake stated that the report was discussed, page by page, and a difficult situation was faced because there were varying opinions on whether a fraud took place or not.

He pointed out that the situation was the same today – where 14 out of the 26 members of COPE that attended today’s meeting  – agreed with the second draft report which was submitted by the chairman and the secretary, and they agreed on the investigation into the fraud and the recommendations. And there was also a group of MPs that stated that there should be amendments to the report, based on the recommendations of these MPs, the committee was forced to come to a realisation that there could be a separate report prepared on the same investigation.

He added that most likely there will be two reports submitted by the two groups of MP’ on the bond scam,  while the report or reports of COPE on this bond scam will be submitted to parliament within this month.
